An I Ching hexagram, cast into the bottle
Wuyou Zhizhen

It does not point at the sky; it curves inward and closes into a perfect circle. In the hand it feels not cold but gently warm, like holding a smooth, mellow arc. Look closer and the design reveals itself: on the waist, an anti-slip ridge is carved as the Kun trigram (☷) above and the Qian trigram (☰) below — together forming the "Tai" (Peace) hexagram of the I Ching.

This baijiu is called Wuyou Zhizhen.

I. Riverside of the Chishui, a founding heart in 1983

Guizhou Wuyou Liquor (Group) Co., Ltd. was founded in 1983 on the scenic bank of the Chishui River in Maotai town — the core production region of Chinese sauce-aroma baijiu, directly across the river from the Moutai distillery. Over four decades on this "River of Fine Wine", Wuyou has grown three production bases — Wuyouyuan, Wuyoushan and Wuyougu — covering more than 350 mu (about 23 ha) and producing over 7,000 tonnes of premium daqu sauce-aroma baijiu a year, earning the industry's nickname: "Maotai Town's second legend."

"Wuyou" means "without worry" — it is both the brand name and the brewer's original intent: every glass should be reassuring, enjoyable, worry-free.

II. 12987: the craft code of sauce aroma

Sauce-aroma baijiu follows the most demanding craft in Chinese liquor. Wuyou strictly adheres to the traditional daqu method: one production cycle per year, two grain feedings, nine steamings, eight fermentations and seven extractions of the distillate — known in the trade as "12987". Qu starter is made at the Dragon Boat Festival, grain is fed at the Double Ninth Festival, following the rhythm of the seasons; the base liquor then matures in traditional clay jars, aging slowly in a micro-oxygen environment. Nothing can be rushed, and nothing can be skipped.

III. The I Ching on a bottle: blessings cast into an object

In Chinese culture, the circle is one of the highest forms. Wuyou's round bottle instantly recalls the laughing Maitreya Buddha with his great belly that holds all — the circle means "capacity": drinking, perhaps, is not for drunkenness but for practicing the magnanimity that "drinks down one's worries and turns them into openness of heart".

Look closer: the bottle is round outside and square within — a rounded body with an upright square seal. In dealings, be round and accommodating; at the core, hold your own principles. The cloth pouch echoes the布袋 monk Budai: let go, and you are without worry.

IV. Zhizhen: a blessing you can drink

Four decades of craft have settled into four series — Zhizun, Zhizhen, Tairan and Wuyou Xijiu.
