Few wineries in China dare to put "vintage" on a bottle in earnest. Niya does the opposite: from 2012 to 2022 it released only ten vintage wines β€” each one had to pass a single question first: was this year good enough?

All ten share one name: Niya Vintage Berry-Selected Cabernet Sauvignon, every bottle from the Manas sub-region at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains. Ten wines in ten years β€” barely one a year β€” in a market where almost everyone dresses up ordinary harvests as "great years", that restraint is itself a statement.

I. Manas: China's first officially certified wine "sub-region"

In November 2017, the China Alcoholic Drinks Association granted the nation's first certified wine sub-region to the Manas ecological vineyards on the northern piedmont of the Tianshan. Manas receives only 189.2mm of rain a year; its gravelly, weakly alkaline, potassium- and calcium-rich soils drain freely; irrigation comes from meltwater of ten-thousand-year-old glaciers; day-night temperature swings reach 15–20Β°C; and sunshine totals about 2,800 hours a year. Low rainfall, gravel soils, glacial snowmelt, wide diurnal range, long sunlight β€” Niya calls these the "five natural endowments" of its ecological vineyards.

A sub-region is never self-declared: yields are capped at 500–800kg per mu (well below typical vineyards), vines average more than two decades of age, and harvest is by hand β€” bunch by bunch, then three rounds of manual sorting at the winery. Terroir, in the end, is something that enters the wine one vine and one bunch at a time.

πŸ‡ A single grape's ticket in

"Berry-selected" means the grapes are screened not bunch by bunch but berry by berry. What follows is even more exacting: fermentation lasts only 30 days, and the yield is squeezed down to 35% β€” nearly two-thirds of the fruit's substance is set aside, keeping only the most concentrated core. The wine then ages 12 months in new French oak and rests another full year in bottle before it is allowed to be sold.

II. Ten vintages in ten years: only "exceptional years"

Look down Niya's vintage chart and you will notice an eloquent gap β€” 2019 is absent. For a house that writes "only exceptional years" into its product logic, not every harvest earns a place in the barrel; absence can itself be a form of discipline. Every vintage release carries two signatures β€” nature's and the winemaker's. Nature supplies cool, dry ripening that concentrates the fruit without rot; the winemaker supplies the harder part: restraint, and the humility to read each year anew.

Take the 2018 vintage: 15% vol is a mark of fully ripe fruit in this cool climate β€” deeper color, a more generous tannin backbone, and a longer life ahead in bottle. Each vintage release is a seal stamped on the year it was born.

III. Why do people collect a "year"?

To collect a vintage is, at heart, to collect that year's sunlight, rain and frost. Niya's 2014 Berry-Selected vintage has gathered six awards at domestic and international competitions; across the CITIC Niya group, official counts put accumulated gold and silver awards at nearly 300 β€” and the vintage series remains among its most decorated lines.

In China, gifting by year is wine's own romance: the year a child was born, the year a company was founded, the year love began. Once a bottle bears a year, it stops being merely wine β€” it becomes a stretch of time you can open and taste again.
