Some distilleries are simply factories. Jiannanchun feels more like a living museum of Chinese baijiu.

In Mianzhu, Sichuan, Jiannanchun has turned the thousand-year story of “imperial wine of the Tang, Jiannanchun of today” into a route visitors can actually walk: the Jiannanchun Cultural Journey.

From the sweeping tiled roofs seen in aerial views of the plant to the ancient fermentation pits of Tianyi Laohao; from rows of thousands of clay jars to a museum of liquor history. This is not an ordinary factory tour — it is a walk through a millennium of brewing heritage.

1. The Distillery: A Brewing Landscape in Red Walls and Grey Tiles

The first thing you notice is the architecture: upturned eaves, red walls, grey tiles, and a classical gatehouse at the centre. Deeper inside, modern facilities stand side by side with the old buildings.

On one side, an unbroken brewing tradition of more than a thousand years; on the other, modern capacity and quality control. That contrast is the truest portrait of Jiannanchun.

2. Tianyi Laohao: A Flavour Made by Time

The official description is simple and moving: “Stand among the vast group of ancient fermentation pits, breathe the lingering aroma, and feel it — a miniature of Mianzhu’s thousand-year liquor culture, and the guarantee of Jiannanchun’s quality.”

There is a saying in baijiu: fine liquor comes from old pits. The older the pit, the richer and more stable the microbial community in its mud — and the fuller, more layered the spirit. This is not mysticism; it is centuries of microbial domestication.

🏺 THE TRINITY OF THE JOURNEY

The ancient pits of Tianyi Laohao (a working brewing site) + the Jiannanchun Liquor History Museum (a millennium of records) + the 10,000-ton clay jar storehouse (the workshop of time).

3. The Clay Jar Storehouse: Quietly Ageing Time

“Walk into the jar storehouse and see the magnificent clay jars lined up in perfect order. The spirit ages inside for years; the moment a jar is opened, a mellow fragrance rushes out.”

A clay jar is far more than a container. Its slight breathability lets the liquor mature slowly, binding aroma molecules and water more tightly — time’s second act of brewing.

4. The Liquor History Museum: Baijiu’s Past and Present

Here you can trace the development of Chinese liquor culture. The precious relics on display witness Jiannanchun’s history and serve as valuable research material for the entire industry.

5. The Modern Packaging Centre: Tradition Meets Intelligence

On the lines, bottle after bottle of Jiannanchun moves forward, the brand mark clearly visible. The ancient craft survives today because the whole chain — brewing, ageing, packaging — has kept pace.
