In 1862, the salt merchant Hua Lianhui founded Cheng Yi Shao Fang in Maotai town — because his mother still remembered a fine wine she had once tasted there. With that act of filial love, the prologue of Chinese soy-sauce-aroma baijiu began.

The story opens with devotion. In the first year of the Tongzhi era (1862), Hua Lianhui, a salt merchant of Zunyi, heard his elderly mother long for a wine she had enjoyed in her youth in Maotai town. To fulfil her wish, he founded Cheng Yi Shao Fang (originally named Chengyu Shao Fang) in Maotai. Its wine came to be called "Huamao" — the Maotai liquor of the Hua family. No one imagined that this kettle, lit for filial love, would become one of the three founding distilleries of Moutai.

1. The glory of Panama, and the root of state-owned Moutai

In 1915, at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Cheng Yi Shao Fang and Rong He Shao Fang represented China and introduced the soy-sauce aroma of Maotai to the world. In 1951, Cheng Yi Shao Fang was nationalised and became a core part of the state-owned Kweichow Moutai Distillery — today's Moutai rose from the furnaces of these three houses.

In a sense, the history of Huamao is the first chapter of the history of Moutai.

🏺 Product File

Huamao · Heritage 1862: produced by Kweichow Moutai Co., Ltd. (sauce-aroma series division); soy-sauce-aroma baijiu, 53%vol, 500ml/bottle. Its name honours the founding year 1862; it was launched with the revival of the Huamao brand in 2018, carrying on the culture of filial piety and propriety.

2. 2018: a revival rooted in filial ritual

In December 2018, the Huamao brand was formally revived. The new Huamao follows the elegant style of Moutai's sauce-aroma series, writing the founding year into the product name "Heritage 1862" and the culture of filial piety and propriety into the brand's very core — a wine born of filial love has returned to the inheritance of filial ritual.

A bottle of Huamao offered to one's parents honours their nurturing; a bottle presented to elders carries gratitude. This "filial goodness" gives Huamao a rare emotional warmth within the Moutai family.

3. Daqu soy-sauce craft, the craft of time

As a member of Maotai town's sauce-aroma lineage, Huamao follows the Daqu soy-sauce process: qu made at the Dragon Boat Festival, sorghum laid at the Double Ninth, one full year per production cycle — depth only time can deposit. The classic 53%vol carries the combined gift of the Chishui River valley's terroir and its microbial communities.
